Cause of Death Confirmed for Brazilian Tourist After Indonesia Volcano Fall

A Brazilian tourist who fell from a cliff near Mount Rinjani volcano in Indonesia last month died from internal bleeding and bone fractures, according to a coroner’s report. Juliana Marins, 26, was hiking the volcano with a tour group when the fatal accident occurred on June 21.

The report clarifies the medical cause of death following the recovery of Marins’ body days after the fall.

Tourist Dies After Fall

Juliana Marins was found dead on June 24 after she slipped and fell hundreds of feet from a cliff on Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-highest volcano. She was hiking with a guided group when the incident took place on June 21. Rescue efforts were challenging due to difficult weather conditions in the mountainous area.

Indonesian rescue workers located and recovered Marins’ body three days after the fall.

Coroner Determines Cause of Death

A report from coroners in Brazil obtained by Agencia Brasil details the cause of death. According to the report, Marins died from “internal bleeding caused by damage to the organs and bone fractures.” These injuries resulted from “blunt force trauma a few hours before the body was recovered.”

The report estimates that Marins likely died approximately 20 minutes after the bleeding began. Medical personnel found no signs of tissue damage from cold, ruling out hypothermia as a cause of death. The final results of the autopsy, including toxicology tests, are expected in the coming weeks.

Brazilian Government and Family Response

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced on June 27 that the Brazilian government would cover the costs of transporting Marins’ body from Indonesia back to Brazil. He stated that the federal government would provide all necessary support to the family.

Marins’ sister, Marianna, reportedly told Brazilian media that the tour guide abandoned her sister on the trail more than an hour before the fall occurred.

Following the recovery of Marins’ body on June 24, her family released a statement saying they would seek justice. The family alleged “great negligence on the part of the rescue team,” stating that Juliana “would still be alive” if the team had reached her within an estimated seven hours.

History of Accidents on Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani is a popular but challenging hiking destination. According to local media reports, several tourists have died in accidents while hiking the volcano in recent years. This includes a Malaysian tourist who also fell off a cliff in May.

The confirmation of Juliana Marins’ cause of death provides clarity on the medical circumstances of the tragedy, while her family’s calls for justice highlight potential questions surrounding the events leading up to her fall and the subsequent rescue efforts.
