Google’s Gemini Gets a Brand New Look: Here’s Why

Get ready for a colorful change! Google is updating the icon for its Gemini AI assistant, moving away from its signature blue and purple look to embrace the familiar red, yellow, green, and blue of the main Google brand. This isn’t just a cosmetic tweak; it signals Google’s growing confidence in Gemini and its integration into the core Google experience.

This shift means Gemini is officially joining the visual “family” of Google’s other key apps and services. For users, this change is starting to appear in certain parts of the app and hints at a broader rollout soon.

Out With the Blue & Purple, In With Google Colors

Since it first arrived, the Gemini app has been recognized by its unique sparkle-shaped icon in shades of blue and purple. It stood out on your phone’s home screen with this distinct palette. However, that’s about to change.

The new icon keeps the familiar four-pointed sparkle shape but adopts the four primary colors seen across many Google products: blue, red, yellow, and green. Blue remains prominent on the right side, while the other points feature the different colors, creating a gradient effect on the left.

This follows some smaller changes made earlier this year. In April, Google slightly adjusted the blue and purple icon on Android and iOS. More recently, when Google simplified its AI offerings by retiring “Gemini Advanced,” it also started phasing out the red version of the Gemini logo that was previously associated with that tier. This helped make it clearer that there’s now just one main Gemini experience.

Why the Change? Joining the Google Family

This move to make Gemini’s icon match the standard Google colors isn’t random. It makes the Gemini icon look right at home next to the updated main Google ‘G’ logo that was introduced a few weeks ago.

Aligning Gemini’s branding with the rest of Google’s core services reflects a growing confidence in the AI chatbot’s place within the company. It suggests that Google sees Gemini not as a separate, experimental product, but as a fundamental part of what Google offers, just like Search, Maps, or Gmail. This branding consistency helps solidify Gemini’s position as Google’s primary AI offering.

Where You Can See the New Icon Now

So far, this new four-color Gemini icon is only starting to appear in select places. We’ve seen it show up within the Google app beta version 16.25, specifically when using features like “Audio Overviews.”

It’s not yet live everywhere, like on your home screen or desktop, but its appearance in the beta version is a strong sign that a wider rollout is coming soon.

What This Means for You

On one hand, integrating Gemini visually with other Google apps makes the overall brand look more unified. It reinforces that Gemini is a key Google service. On the other hand, some users might miss the distinct blue and purple look that helped the Gemini app stand out on a crowded home screen, especially if they feel many Google icons already look quite similar with the same color palette.

Ultimately, the shape of the icon still makes it recognizable, but the color change is a clear visual cue that Gemini is becoming more deeply embedded in the core Google experience. Keep an eye out for the new look appearing on your devices soon!
