Google’s New Doppl App Lets You Virtually Try On Any Outfit

Imagine trying on any outfit you see – whether online, in a store, or on a friend – without actually putting it on. Google is making this a reality with a new experimental app called Doppl. Launched recently for iOS and Android users in the U.S., Doppl uses artificial intelligence to show you how different clothes might look on you specifically.

This isn’t just about seeing clothes on generic models; Doppl creates a digital version of your own body based on a photo you provide. Then, you can use photos of outfits to see how they drape, fit, and look on your unique shape. It’s like having a virtual dressing room right in your pocket.

How Doppl Works Its Magic

Getting started with Doppl is pretty straightforward. First, you snap or upload a full-body photo of yourself into the app. Think of this as creating your personal mannequin.

Once your digital self is ready, you can feed the app images of outfits you’re curious about. This could be a screenshot from social media, a photo you took of a dress in a shop window, or even a picture of clothes you already own but want to see styled differently.

Doppl’s AI then gets to work. It takes the outfit image and layers it onto your digital body, creating a new picture of you wearing those clothes. What’s really cool is that Doppl can even turn these static images into short AI-generated videos, giving you a better feel for how the fabric might move or how the outfit looks from different angles.

You can save all your virtual tries, create a gallery of potential looks, and even share your favorite virtual makeovers with friends to get their opinion.

More Personal Than Before

Google has dabbled in virtual try-on technology before, particularly within Google Shopping. However, those features typically showed clothing items on a variety of diverse models. While helpful, it still left you wondering how it would look on your body.

Doppl takes this a step further by using a digital representation based on your uploaded photo. This offers a much more personalized and potentially more accurate preview of how clothes might actually fit and appear on you.

It’s an Experiment – For Now

Doppl is part of Google Labs, which means it’s an experimental project. Google sees it as a fun and interactive way for people to play with style and explore fashion possibilities. It also helps Google gather valuable data on how users interact with this kind of personalized AI visual tool, which could inform future shopping or creative features.

Being an experiment, Google notes that Doppl is still in its early stages. The AI might not always get the details perfectly right – things like fit, exact appearance, or tiny clothing details might occasionally look off. Think of it as a cool preview tool, not a guarantee of perfect fit.

Right now, Doppl is only available in the U.S. on iOS and Android. There’s no official word yet on if or when Google might expand it to other regions.

Doppl represents an exciting step towards making online and digital fashion exploration feel more personal and interactive. It’s a neat peek into how AI could change the way we shop and style ourselves in the future.
