Great news, Slayers! If you thought the demon-slaying action in the new DOOM: The Dark Ages felt a little too forgiving, the developers have heard you loud and clear. A recent update has been released specifically to dial up the challenge, making the game harder across the board, especially on its toughest difficulty settings.

This isn’t a typical minor patch. These are targeted balance adjustments, sometimes called “Tunables,” delivered server-side, focusing on one main goal: making you sweat more as you rip and tear through Hell’s forces. The big takeaway? Enemies are deadlier, your survival tools are less generous, and mistiming key mechanics will cost you dearly.
Why Did the Game Get Harder?
Believe it or not, after the game’s successful launch (racking up over three million players in just five days and earning widespread positive reviews), a significant amount of player feedback pointed to one surprising issue: the game felt too easy, even on the highest difficulty, Nightmare Mode.
id Software, known for listening to its community, decided to respond by tweaking game systems to provide the brutal challenge fans expect from DOOM.
What Exactly Changed? The Demons Hit Harder
The update introduces several key changes aimed at increasing the difficulty. Think of it as the game pushing back with more force.
Tougher Enemies, Less Forgiveness
Certain enemies you encounter will now deal more damage with specific attacks. This includes familiar faces and new threats like the Agaddon Hunter, Cosmic Baron, Hellknight, Komodo, and Pinky Rider. The goal here is simple: make these encounters more impactful and punishing if you aren’t careful.
For example, on Nightmare difficulty, missing a crucial parry against an Agaddon Hunter’s overhead slash will now completely break your shield, instead of just dealing heavy damage. This single change forces you to be much more precise and tactical in combat.

Additionally, the game’s internal systems that are designed to offer players a second chance when they’re near death have been made less generous across most difficulty levels. Previously, these systems might have let you survive situations that, frankly, should have resulted in losing a life or needing to restart. Now, the game demands better tactical decisions and execution to stay alive. These adjustments will be most noticeable the higher you crank up the damage scale slider.
Survival Tools Are Scarcer
You might also find yourself scrounging for health and armor more often. The update has reduced the frequency with which these crucial pick-ups drop from enemies. In certain boss fights, the health and armor items that do drop won’t stick around in the world for as long, forcing you to grab them quickly or risk losing them. Some specific boss encounters, like the final fight involving the Atlan, have also been rebalanced to present a greater challenge.
These tweaks mean you can no longer rely as much on brute-forcing your way through intense fights by simply picking up abundant resources. Resource management and strategic movement are now more critical than ever.
Ripping and Tearing Just Got More Intense
While DOOM: The Dark Ages launched to critical acclaim (our own review gave it a perfect 5/5 score) and quickly drew a massive player base, this update demonstrates id Software’s commitment to refining the gameplay based on community feedback. If you were one of the players wishing for a steeper challenge, especially on higher difficulties, this patch delivers exactly that.
DOOM: The Dark Ages is available now on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (via Battle.net, Steam, and the Xbox PC app), Xbox Game Pass, and PlayStation 5.
