Gaming Giant Virtuos Lays Off 270 Employees, Reshaping Its Future

One of the gaming industry’s key players, Virtuos, known for helping bring some of your favorite games to new platforms, has announced a significant restructuring. The studio, which has worked on titles like The Outer Worlds and contributed to the recent Oblivion Remastered, has laid off approximately 270 employees globally. This move, representing about 7% of its total workforce, signals a strategic shift in how the company approaches game development.

These layoffs, with 200 roles impacted in Asia and 70 in Europe, are primarily in teams facing reduced demand due to broader changes within the game industry. It’s a clear indicator that even established studios are adapting to evolving market needs.

Why the Change? Adapting to a Shifting Gaming Landscape

In a statement on its official website, Virtuos detailed its plans to “evolve to meet the changing needs of our partners and the industry.” The company explained that as game development becomes more intricate, they are realigning their global operations to strengthen their “high-value co-development” services.

What does “high-value co-development” mean? Essentially, it signifies a deeper, more integrated partnership with other game developers. Instead of just handling “ports” (optimizing a game for a different console, like bringing a PC game to Nintendo Switch), Virtuos aims to focus more on full game engineering, advanced art, creative content production, and even live service support for existing games. This strategic pivot means they are moving away from service segments where demand might be shrinking.

Over the past year, Virtuos has reinforced this direction through key acquisitions, including Beyond-FX, Pipeworks, and Umanaïa in North America, as well as Third Kind Games and Abstraction in Europe. These acquisitions bolster their expertise in areas like visual effects, game design, and Unreal Engine programming. The company stated that this investment reflects their intention to grow in areas where their scale and expertise provide lasting value. They also emphasized the need to align team locations more closely with clients for the increasingly iterative (or constantly evolving) nature of creative co-development, which is why the reorganization has had a greater impact on their teams in Asia.

Supporting Those Impacted and Looking Ahead

Virtuos has expressed gratitude for the contributions of those affected by the layoffs. The company is committed to providing separation packages, career transition assistance, and exploring opportunities for redeployment within its global network where feasible.

Despite the significant changes, Virtuos assures that it remains fully committed to its existing partnerships. This includes their ongoing work on major titles like Cyberpunk 2077. The news about Virtuos’s layoffs comes amidst a broader trend of workforce reductions across the tech and gaming industries, including recent large-scale layoffs at Microsoft’s Xbox division.

This move by Virtuos highlights the dynamic and often challenging landscape of game development, where studios must constantly adapt to stay competitive and relevant. It’s a reminder that even behind the most beloved games, companies are continuously evolving their strategies to meet the future demands of players and the industry.
