Last Chance to Save Salisbury’s Only Retro Pinball Arcade

A much-loved retro arcade in Salisbury, Highest Score, is facing its final game over. The independent venue, home to classic pinball and arcade machines, was forced to close last month due to rising costs and low visitor numbers. Now, the owner is making a final plea to the community with special open days this week, hoping to bring back the magic and keep the joysticks moving.

This is more than just a business closing; it’s about preserving a unique slice of gaming history and community fun. The owner is calling on everyone – from seasoned gamers to curious families – to show their support and help save this local gem before it’s gone for good.

The High Score Dream Facing Defeat

Highest Score, located in the Cross Keys Shopping Centre, opened its doors in August 2023, bringing a carefully curated collection of classic arcade cabinets and beautifully restored pinball machines to Salisbury. Unlike modern gaming which is often solitary and digital, Highest Score offered a hands-on, social experience.

Owner James Petherick envisioned a place where different generations could connect over the simple joy of physical gaming. He noted that many younger people have never even seen a real pinball machine, and his goal was to reintroduce that tactile, noisy, exciting world.

After the initial closure, the community’s reaction was clear: they didn’t want to lose this unique spot. “When I closed, the whole community was, like, ‘wow, we can’t afford to lose this’,” Mr. Petherick shared. This outpouring of support fueled his decision to try one last push.

How You Can Help Save the Arcade

The critical moment comes with two special open days happening on July 11th and 12th. Mr. Petherick is hoping these days will not only raise vital funds but also demonstrate to everyone that an independent venue like this can thrive with local backing.

“This weekend is about showing what’s possible when people come together. If there’s ever been a time to visit, it’s now,” he urged.

The invitation is wide open, welcoming “anyone aged eight to 80.” Whether you’re a retro gaming enthusiast, a parent looking for a fun family outing, or just curious about classic arcade machines, there’s something for everyone. Entry is incredibly accessible, requiring just a minimum £1 donation for unlimited playtime.

For those who can’t make it in person but still want to contribute, an online donation page has also been set up to help secure the arcade’s future.

What’s at Stake?

Saving Highest Score means preserving more than just old games. It means keeping a community hub alive, a place for intergenerational fun, and a physical space dedicated to a form of entertainment that’s increasingly rare. It’s a chance to step away from screens and experience the satisfying thwack of a pinball flipper or the satisfying click of an arcade button.

Mr. Petherick hopes the funds raised over these two days will give the arcade enough breathing room to survive at least another week, hopefully carrying it through the summer holidays and beyond. It’s a tight race against time and costs, but the owner believes that with community support, Salisbury’s unique retro arcade still has a chance to keep the high scores rolling.
