Great news for foldable phone fans! It looks like Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 7, the stylish flip phone, might include support for the latest and greatest in wireless charging: Qi2. This next-generation technology promises a more convenient and potentially faster way to power up your device, bringing the Flip line closer to the premium charging features seen on phones like the Galaxy S25 series.

What is Qi2 and Why Does it Matter?
You’re probably familiar with Qi wireless charging – just place your phone on a pad and it starts charging. Qi2 takes this a step further, borrowing a key feature from Apple’s MagSafe: magnets!
Think of Qi2 as “Qi with magnets built-in.” These magnets ensure your phone snaps perfectly into place on a compatible charger or accessory. Why is this great?
- Perfect Alignment: No more fiddling to find the charging sweet spot. The magnets handle it, ensuring you get the fastest possible charging speed the standard allows.
- Reliable Connection: A stable magnetic connection means less chance of your phone getting knocked off the charger or losing connection mid-charge.
- Accessory Ecosystem: Qi2 opens the door to a wider range of magnetic accessories, like car mounts that charge your phone, desk stands, or even magnetic battery packs that attach seamlessly.
So, if the Galaxy Z Flip 7 gets Qi2, it means you’ll enjoy easier, more reliable wireless charging and be compatible with a growing world of magnetic Qi2 accessories.
The Clue: A Mysterious Certification Listing
How do we know the Flip 7 might get this cool tech? The hint comes from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), the organization that sets the standards for wireless charging.
Recently, the WPC certified a Samsung phone with a rather unusual model number: SM-A846U. This number doesn’t immediately match Samsung’s typical naming scheme for their flagship or foldable phones (which usually start with SM-S for S series or SM-F for foldables). The certification confirms the device supports Qi 2.1, essentially meaning it’s “Qi2 Ready.”

Why This Might Be the Galaxy Z Flip 7
Here’s where the theory comes in. While the SM-A846U model number seems odd, it’s not the first time a Galaxy Z Flip has shown up on the WPC certification list with an ‘A’ prefix. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 (which actually has a model number starting with SM-F731) was listed on the WPC site under SM-A822D.
Following this pattern, the SM-A846U listing could very well correspond to the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 7. It’s possible it could also be a Fan Edition (FE) version, like a Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, but affordable FE models often skip premium features like the latest wireless charging standards to keep costs down. This makes the standard Galaxy Z Flip 7 the more likely candidate for Qi2 support.
Remember, Samsung has already started adopting Qi2, making the Galaxy S25 series their first phones compatible right out of the box. We’ve also seen rumors that the larger foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, will likely feature Qi2 support as well. Adding the Flip 7 to this list would complete the lineup of Samsung’s next-gen flagships embracing the new standard.
What We Still Don’t Know
While the Qi2 certification is a strong indicator, one key detail is still up in the air: Will the Galaxy Z Flip 7 have the built-in magnets needed for magnetic attachment? Qi2 requires magnets for its full functionality (like magnetic alignment for faster speeds and accessory compatibility). The “Qi2 Ready” certification means the charging coils support the standard, but the magnets are a separate physical component.
We’ll have to wait for more leaks or official announcements to confirm if Samsung will include the necessary magnetic array in the Flip 7 itself, or if users will need a special case to get the full magnetic Qi2 experience.
Bringing Better Charging to Your Pocket
Adding Qi2 support to the Galaxy Z Flip 7 would be a welcome upgrade. It means easier, more reliable wireless charging whether you’re powering up at home, in the car, or on the go with a magnetic power bank. This small but significant technical detail points towards Samsung bringing its foldable phones in line with the best charging experiences available. Keep an eye out for more details as we get closer to the Flip 7’s expected launch!
