A 17-year-old, Karmelo Anthony, has been indicted on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with a fatal stabbing at a high school track meet earlier this year. Authorities have confirmed that Anthony will not face the death penalty in this case.
The indictment marks a significant step in the legal process following the death of Austin Metcalf. The case is proceeding through the court system.
Indictment Details
Karmelo Anthony was formally indicted on Tuesday, June 24, for one count of first-degree murder. The charge stems from an incident on April 2 during a high school track meet where Austin Metcalf was fatally stabbed.
An indictment means that a grand jury has found sufficient evidence to believe a crime was committed and the accused should face trial.

Why No Death Penalty
Despite the serious nature of the first-degree murder charge, law enforcement sources have stated that the death penalty will not be sought or applied in Anthony’s case.
There are two primary reasons for this. First, prosecutors are reportedly not seeking the death penalty. Second, and crucially, Karmelo Anthony is 17 years old. Under current legal precedents in the United States, individuals who were under the age of 18 at the time an alleged crime was committed are not eligible for the death penalty.
Instead of capital punishment, Anthony faces a potential sentence of up to life in prison if convicted of the charge.

Victim’s Family Reacts
Jeff Metcalf, the father of the victim, Austin Metcalf, commented on the development. He stated that he would have supported the death penalty if the accused had been 18 years old at the time of the incident.
Metcalf acknowledged the legal reality regarding Anthony’s age, stating, “It’s the law unfortunately. If it would have happened 6 weeks later, he would have been 18. Then it’s a different ball game. We have to play the cards we are dealt.”
He also expressed that nothing could bring his son back. Despite the limitations on the potential punishment, Jeff Metcalf indicated he was “pleased” that the case is moving forward through the legal system.
Defense Statement
Karmelo Anthony’s attorney, Mike Howard, provided a statement regarding the indictment. Howard maintained that his client’s actions were taken in “self-defense.”
The defense attorney expressed confidence that as the case proceeds through the court system, a jury will ultimately reach a conclusion that reflects justice.

The case is expected to proceed to trial following the indictment. The legal proceedings will determine the outcome of the first-degree murder charge against Karmelo Anthony.
