Trump Declares Relationship with Elon Musk Likely Over, Warns of “Serious Consequences”

Former U.S. President Donald Trump indicated over the weekend that his relationship with tech billionaire Elon Musk has ended and warned Musk could face repercussions if he supports Trump’s political opponents. The public fallout follows Musk’s recent strong criticism of a budget bill championed by Trump.

The Friction Point: A Budget Bill

The public rift began earlier in the week when Elon Musk used his social media platform X to criticize a budget bill supported by Donald Trump. Musk described the bill as a “disgusting abomination,” warning it would increase the federal deficit.

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the proposed legislation would cut spending and taxes but is projected to leave millions more without health insurance and add trillions to the national debt over a decade. Trump had publicly praised the bill.

Trump’s Stance: No Reconciliation

In a phone interview on Saturday, Donald Trump stated he was not interested in repairing his relationship with Elon Musk. When asked if their relationship, which previously saw Musk as a campaign benefactor and ally, was over, Trump responded, “I would assume so, yeah.”

Trump cited being “too busy” and claimed he had provided significant assistance to Musk’s businesses during his presidency. “I gave him a lot of breaks long before this happened,” Trump said. “I gave him breaks in my first administration and saved his life in my first administration. I have no intention of speaking to him.”

Warning of “Serious Consequences”

Amid speculation that Musk might financially back Democratic candidates in future elections, Trump issued a direct warning. “If he does, he’ll have to pay the consequences for that,” Trump told the interviewer, though he declined to specify what those consequences might be. Musk’s companies, including SpaceX, hold numerous lucrative federal contracts.

Social Media Escalation and Context

The disagreement escalated into bitter personal exchanges between Trump and Musk on social media. During this period, Musk suggested Trump should be impeached and made an unsubstantiated claim regarding the government concealing information about Trump’s association with Jeffrey Epstein. Musk later appeared to walk back the Epstein claim by deleting his tweet on Saturday.

The back-and-forth prompted concern among some White House staff and Republican congressional leaders.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance attempted to downplay the feud during an interview, describing Musk as an “emotional guy” who made a “huge mistake” by criticizing Trump. Vance expressed hope that Musk might eventually reconcile, despite having “gone so nuclear.”

Vance also praised Musk as an “incredible entrepreneur” and spoke positively about his efforts to cut government spending. Regarding the criticized budget bill, Vance stated its primary goal was to extend tax cuts enacted during Trump’s first term, calling it a “good bill” though “not a perfect bill.”

The public dispute highlights the shifting dynamics between key figures in U.S. politics and business.
