Deadly Bridge Collapse Derails Train in Russia’s Bryansk Region

At least seven people died and dozens were injured when a highway bridge collapsed onto railway tracks in Russia’s Bryansk region late Saturday night, causing a passenger train to derail near the border with Ukraine. The incident involved heavy trucks falling onto the moving train, leading to casualties and disruptions to rail traffic.

The collapse prompted an immediate response from emergency services and launched an investigation into the cause, which Moscow Railway initially attributed to “illegal interference.” The incident highlights potential infrastructure vulnerabilities and their impact on transportation safety.

Bridge Collapse Hits Passenger Train

The initial collapse occurred in the Vygonichsky district of the Bryansk region. A section of a highway bridge gave way, sending heavy trucks onto the railway line below just as a passenger train was passing.

The train, traveling from Klimovo towards Moscow, was significantly impacted. The locomotive and several carriages derailed as a result of the debris falling onto the tracks.

Emergency services rushed to the scene to conduct rescue operations. Fire and rescue units worked to locate and assist passengers trapped in the wreckage.

Initial reports from local governor Alexander Bogomaz confirmed seven fatalities. Additionally, 31 people were reported injured, with two, including a child, listed in serious condition. All injured individuals were transported to hospitals in the Bryansk region for medical treatment.

Pictures shared online depicted twisted train carriages and passengers helping each other escape the wreckage in the darkness following the collapse. Additional emergency workers and equipment were dispatched to the site to aid the recovery and investigation efforts.

The Moscow Interregional Transport Prosecutor’s Office announced it had launched an official investigation into the Bryansk incident to determine the exact cause of the bridge failure.

Location Context and Second Incident

The Bryansk region is situated in western Russia, bordering Ukraine. The site of the bridge collapse is approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the Ukrainian border. The proximity raises questions regarding potential geopolitical context, although the investigation is ongoing.

Passengers from the affected train were evacuated from the immediate area and directed to a nearby station. Moscow Railway stated that a reserve train was arranged to transport passengers from Bryansk to Moscow, allowing them to complete their journey.

Hours after the Bryansk incident, on Sunday morning, a second bridge collapse was reported in Russia, this time in the Trosna-Kalinovka highway area in the Kursk region, also near the Ukrainian border. According to the acting governor of Kursk Oblast, Alexander Khinshtein, a freight train was crossing the bridge when it collapsed.

Part of the freight train reportedly fell onto the road below and caught fire. The train driver sustained injuries to his legs during this second incident. Investigations into the cause of the Kursk bridge collapse are also expected to take place.

Aftermath and Investigation

The collapse in Bryansk led to significant disruption on the affected railway line. Emergency crews focused on clearing the wreckage and repairing the damaged infrastructure.

While Moscow Railway initially suggested “illegal interference” played a role in the Bryansk collapse, official investigators are expected to consider all potential factors, including structural integrity, maintenance, and external influences.

The two separate bridge collapses in regions bordering Ukraine within a short timeframe have drawn attention to the state of infrastructure and transportation security in these areas.

The full extent of the damage and the timeline for restoring normal rail operations in Bryansk remain under assessment. Further updates are expected as investigations into both bridge failures progress.
