Gaza Aid Ship Rescues Migrants After Mediterranean Rescue Attempt

A vessel operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, en route to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, rescued four migrants in the Mediterranean Sea on Thursday after they jumped from another boat to avoid interception by Libyan authorities.

The incident highlights the perilous journeys of migrants in the Mediterranean and intersects with efforts to deliver aid to the besieged Gaza Strip amid a severe humanitarian crisis.

Rescue Operation Underway

The Flotilla vessel, named Madleen, was alerted by the European Union’s Frontex border agency about a distress situation involving a boat carrying 30-40 people. The Madleen arrived at the location to find the boat “rapidly deflating.”

As the Madleen deployed its inflatable rescue boat, a Libyan coast guard vessel approached the scene at high speed. According to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, four individuals on the distressed boat jumped into the sea and swam towards the Madleen, which successfully rescued them.

Fate of Other Migrants and Flotilla’s Response

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition expressed concern about the remaining migrants on the deflating boat, who were reportedly taken by the Libyan authorities. Human rights groups have frequently criticized the return of migrants to Libya, citing risks of abuse and torture.

The coalition has called on Italy, Greece, and Malta to accept the migrants now aboard the Madleen and provide them with safe passage to Europe.

Freedom Flotilla’s Mission to Gaza

The Madleen departed from Sicily on Sunday as part of a mission organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. The primary goals are to challenge the naval blockade of Gaza and deliver essential humanitarian aid, while also raising global awareness about the escalating humanitarian crisis within the Palestinian territory. The voyage is expected to take approximately seven days.

Among the approximately 12 activists participating in the mission are prominent figures such as Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, “Game of Thrones” actor Liam Cunningham, and Rima Hassan, a French Member of the European Parliament of Palestinian descent. Hassan is reportedly barred from entering Israel due to her vocal opposition to Israeli military operations in Gaza.

Context of the Gaza Humanitarian Crisis

Gaza faces a dire humanitarian situation. After a period where aid entry was severely restricted, some basic supplies have been allowed in, but humanitarian organizations warn that the flow is insufficient to meet the population’s needs.

Aid workers have cautioned that famine is imminent unless the volume of supplies significantly increases. The World Food Programme has stated that nearly the entire population of 2.3 million in Gaza is acutely malnourished, with one in five people on the brink of starvation.

Previous Attempt and Future Outlook

This mission follows a previous attempt by the Freedom Flotilla in May 2024, which was unsuccessful. That attempt involved another vessel that the coalition reported was damaged by two drones while in international waters off Malta. The group attributed the attack to Israel, which Israel has not confirmed.

The current Flotilla continues its journey towards Gaza, carrying both humanitarian supplies and the newly rescued migrants, while drawing attention to conditions in Gaza and the broader issue of Mediterranean migration.
