Music Event Supports Ukraine Supplies

The “Play for Ukraine” event took place at the Face Bar in Reading, bringing together local musicians and supporters. This marked the fourth iteration of the fundraiser since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022.

The primary goal of the event was to collect donations specifically to acquire and equip a vehicle with essential supplies. These resources are intended for delivery to areas near the frontline in Ukraine to support humanitarian needs.

Humanitarian Focus

Organizer Pete Laschok, whose father was Ukrainian, emphasized the humanitarian nature of the initiative. He stated the event was not political but focused simply on “helping people.” Witnessing the events in Ukraine since 2022 has been deeply emotional for him.

Mr. Laschok noted that despite the ongoing challenges, the need for aid persists. Five bands volunteered their performances for this year’s event, including Pink Diamond Revue, Natural Right, Hoopy Frood, Kryla, and He Fired First.

Delivering Aid to the Frontline

The donations from the Reading event will be channeled through the Reading Branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB). This organization is responsible for ensuring the funds are used to purchase the vehicle and that it, along with the supplies, reaches Ukraine safely.

Stefan Bomok from the AUGB branch explained that the organization has previously sent five 4×4 vehicles from Reading. He detailed that the new vehicle would be used for transporting “military stuff and medical aid to the frontline” and bringing “wounded back to hospitals.”

Mr. Laschok mentioned that a vehicle funded by last year’s fundraiser remains operational in Ukraine. He reflected that while he hopes his efforts would honor his late father, he is grateful his father did not live to see the devastation of the current conflict. Similarly, Mr. Bomok, whose father was also Ukrainian, shared a personal connection to the country, feeling a strong sense of home there even though he was born in England, attributing it to the strong cultural connection his father provided.

Supporting Ukraine

The “Play for Ukraine” series represents ongoing community efforts in the UK to provide tangible support for humanitarian needs in Ukraine. By funding essential resources like vehicles and supplies, these initiatives aim to alleviate some of the challenges faced by people on the ground.
