Plan B: Ukrainian Studio Unveils Autonomous Underground Living Sanctuary

A Ukrainian design studio has conceptualized “Plan B,” an innovative autonomous underground living space designed to offer safety and luxury in an unpredictable world. This reinforced concrete sanctuary, conceived by MAKHNO Studio, aims to redefine resilient architecture by providing a self-sufficient home 15 meters below ground.

Developed by Serhii Makhno and his team, the 2,280 square meter facility addresses modern anxieties, drawing inspiration from global uncertainties such as the COVID-19 pandemic. It combines robust engineering with sophisticated design to ensure uninterrupted living regardless of external circumstances.

The Design and Structure of Plan B

From the surface, Plan B presents a minimalist, modern aesthetic, resembling a contemporary art museum entrance or a discreet military installation. This above-ground structure occupies just 172 square meters and can be integrated into various landscapes, from dense forests to existing urban environments.

Accessibility is a key feature, with three distinct entrances and a rooftop helipad. An integrated fire-resistant evacuation ring provides a secure escape route from virtually any point within the bunker, prioritizing inhabitant safety.

Unparalleled Autonomy and Life Support

Central to Plan B’s concept is its complete self-sufficiency. All essential systems operate independently, including water supply, sewerage, and a closed ventilation system with recuperation for continuous air intake and purification. This ensures a stable environment unaffected by surface conditions.

The facility also integrates advanced food production capabilities. Dedicated spaces equipped with specialized phyto-equipment allow for the cultivation of vegetables and fruits, complemented by extensive food storage areas. This design aims to provide long-term sustenance for its inhabitants.

Interior Design: Luxury Meets Functionality

MAKHNO Studio’s signature interior design philosophy blends practicality with artistic elements. The living spaces are crafted to counteract any sense of claustrophobia often associated with underground environments. For instance, the master bedroom features curved, almost cylindrical walls that create an illusion of expansive infinity.

Artistic touches, such as Kaws artworks and the studio’s distinctive KHMARA cloud-shaped lamps, further enhance the luxurious atmosphere, transforming the shelter into a sophisticated home.

Comprehensive Facilities and Occupancy

Plan B is designed to accommodate two to three families along with dedicated staff. The layout incorporates carefully planned zones to support various activities and ensure privacy. Medical facilities include an isolator and secure medicine storage. Recreational areas feature unique amenities like a fish pool and even a dedicated pet walking room, emphasizing quality of life. Staff quarters are strategically located in separate areas to ensure efficient operation and privacy.

Chief engineer Olha Sobchyshyna underlined the project’s core philosophy, stating, “Security comes first. My priority was ensuring comfortable sleep, temperature, quality food, water, and air. The rest is just for comfort.” This guiding principle is evident throughout every aspect of the design, from the robust construction to the advanced life support systems.

Implications for Future Living

Plan B represents more than an architectural concept; it reflects a philosophical shift towards proactive preparedness without compromising on quality of life. MAKHNO Studio’s creation demonstrates that families can not only survive but also thrive, irrespective of external global challenges. This innovative underground living space prompts a re-evaluation of what “home” signifies in an uncertain era, showcasing how safety and luxury can coexist even in extreme conditions. It stands as a testament to Ukrainian design capabilities, illustrating architecture’s potential to respond to contemporary global challenges while fulfilling fundamental human needs for security, comfort, and aesthetics.
